The Rare Earth Society is a new non-profit organization just starting its outreach programs, beginning with the Full Circle Artist Residencies. This unique pilot project will take place in Vancouver, British Columbia will span the entire 8 weeks of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Rare Earth Society in conjunction with Gropp’s Gallery (groppsgallery.com) would like to present a unique opportunity to all artists for an unofficial Olympic artist residence. The Full Circle Artist Residency will provide room & board, ample solo exhibition space, as well as an art budget for one artist to inhabit an award winning Yurta, which was just featured on display at the Milan Design Conference (www.yurta.ca).

The Full Circle Artist Residency will run from February 10th, 2010 to March 28th, 2010. This is an opportunity for an artist to develop new work, initiate discourse and collaborations among peers and the public, exhibit work to the public, network, and advance their career on a local and international stage. We are seeking applications from artists of varying disciplines including visual, performing and spiritual arts.

How to Apply :

Please submit the following support materials:
1.    A brief description or proposal of the type of work you are interested in creating during this residency. (less than 1 page, attached PDF or Word document)
2.    15 - 20 images/examples of your previous works. (PDF document, or JPEG attachments please. 72 dpi, less than 2mb/image).
3.    Image list with title of work, medium, dimensions and date.
4.    An Artist Bio, Resume, and CV (PDF or word document)
5.    Website Address (if applicable)

Details of Residency:
46-day stay in furnished, wood heated circular Yurta, 6 blocks from the Vancouver 2010 Olympic village. Access to gallery bathrooms and communal meals included, Art budget of $500 - $1000 (receipts required). Gropp’s Gallery charges a 15% commission on all works sold during the opening of the Blood & Culture exhibition on February 12th, 2010. A Legacy Donation of one piece of art (chosen by the artist) is to be donated to the Rare Earth Society’s permanent collection. With the exception of the Blood & Culture exhibition opening commission charge to Gropp’s Gallery, and the donated piece to the Rare Earth Society (as outlined above), the Artist will hold 100% ownership of all works created and sold during their residency. The chosen artist is required to hold open studios minimum 4 hours a day 5 days a week. Some special events to be held in the Yurta in conjunction with open studio time or at other agreed upon predetermined times. Open to all artists in all disciplines.  

Selection Criteria:
A panel of independent jurors will review all applications. Before applying please note the following:
-This Artist Residency is open to current students, recent graduates, professionals and self-taught artists alike.
-The selected Artist must be able to travel to Vancouver and be personally present for the duration of the show (February 10th to March 28th 2010).
-Applications must include all supporting materials requested, to be considered for this Residency.
-All work submitted in the application and displayed in the Yurta must be original and created by the Artist.

The selected artist will be announced on January 31st, 2010, with the residency commencing on February 10th, 2010.
